Hannah

My heart pounds against my ribs as Tank stands over me, the heat of his muscular body searing into my flesh. Every shallow breath I take is flavored by his masculine scent.

His dark eyes bore into mine, his last statement hanging heavy in the air. I don’t know why he said that. I don’t know what he wants from me.

“I don’t want your pity,” I finally say, finding myself struggling with the words. “If you’re going to turn me in, then do it, but I'm not going to use my past as some twisted negotiation tool.”

A frown crosses his handsome face and he sinks down to sit next to me on the bed. He’s so close, if either of us moves an inch, our legs will be pressed together. My breath lodges in my throat.

The bed creaks beneath his sturdy frame. “I want to understand you, Hannah.”

I can tell talking like this doesn’t come naturally to Tank. He’s used to dealing with his rough and rowdy bounty hunting brothers. Or the criminals he’s caught.

But am I really so different than any of them? I'm nothing but trouble. I’ve been trouble my whole life. I consider clamming up, but what’s the point? I'm going to jail, either way.

“Alyssa is the only friend I’ve ever had,” I begin hesitantly. “She’s got her own share of troubles, that’s for sure, but she isn’t a bad woman.”

I take a deep breath. “We met as kids. Back in grade school, nobody wanted to take a chance on the foster kid. But Alyssa was different. She saw me for who I really was, and not just as some kind of statistic.”

My hands twist into knots as I go on. “We’ve been close ever since. I love Alyssa like a sister. I don’t have a family, and the only other person she has is her grandmother, so when we found out Anne was seriously ill, we had to do something about it. I couldn’t let Alyssa struggle through it all alone.”

I risk a quick look at Tank and discover his eyes are no longer hard. He reaches out and brushes a hand against my cheek, tucking a lock of hair behind my ear.

The gesture is so gentle for such a powerful man that it nearly takes my breath away. I blink furiously, struggling to focus as heat begins to coil tighter and tighter in my core.

I can’t help but smile. He’s not looking at me as if I'm pathetic or a source of pity, like a kicked dog in the street. He’s just watching me and waiting patiently for me to continue.

“I was working as a housekeeper,” I went on quietly. “But it didn’t pay much, as you can imagine, and Alyssa was living paycheck to paycheck, too. We found out there was medicine that could save Grandma Anne, but neither of us could afford it.”

Tank nods silently and reaches down to take my hand between his calloused fingers. His thumb lazily strokes my skin. I find
